Alex was born in a small town in Leicestershire called Coalville. Once he left school he went off to Exeter to study Ancient History and Archaeology, and then on to Birmingham to study Egyptology. The degrees were good fun but he didn't fancy spending the rest of his life in ditches so he decided to try some other things instead.

After teaching English in Greece and Spain, Alex came back to the UK and ended up living in London (where he remains). He started working in libraries and publishing, and whilst there thought it was high time he started writing his own books instead of looking after other people's.

Alex now divides his time between writing and leading creative writing workshops in schools. He feels pretty lucky to be doing things he enjoys so much!
